You probably do not need more leads

When the phone is already ringing, growth is not the constraint. Leakage is.

The wrong first question

When a business wants to grow, the first question is almost always "how do we get more enquiries?"

For a fair number of the businesses we meet, that is the wrong question. The phone rings plenty. The problem is what happens to the enquiries that already arrive.

Where the work actually leaks

Have a look at your own numbers before you spend anything on getting more:

Enquiries that never got a reply. Not refused — just missed. They came in on a channel nobody watches, or on a day that got away from you.

Quotes that never got followed up. They went out, nobody said no, and nobody rang back. In most businesses this is the single biggest pool of recoverable work.

Customers who used you once and never again. Not unhappy. Just not asked. For most service businesses, the second job from an existing customer is the cheapest work available and the easiest to win.

Repeat and maintenance work that lapsed. The annual service, the six-month check, the seasonal job. It only happens if someone remembers, and remembering is not a system.

Every one of those is work you have already paid to attract.

The arithmetic nobody does

Say you quote ten jobs a month and win four. Getting more leads means quoting fifteen to win six — more site visits, more evenings, more diesel.

Or you follow up the six you did not win, and convert one more. Same result. No extra driving, no advertising, no additional quoting.

That is not a clever growth hack. It is just the cheapest work in the business, and it is sitting there because chasing feels like nagging and everyone is busy.

Why it does not happen on its own

Follow-up is the definition of a task that is never urgent. It is also mildly uncomfortable — nobody enjoys ringing to ask about a quote — and it competes with actual work.

So it does not happen. Not through neglect, just through being permanently less pressing than everything else.

That is precisely the kind of job that should not depend on a person remembering.

Before you spend on marketing

Count three numbers from the last three months: enquiries received, quotes sent, jobs won.

If the gap between the first two is large, you have a response problem. If the gap between the last two is large, you have a follow-up problem.

Neither is fixed by more leads. Both are fixed for less than the cost of advertising.
